This is Spain, the fourth largest country in Europe with a population of 50 million, about 70% of its area is completely empty, 90% of Spain’s population is here in Madrid and it lives in the red highlighted coastal areas and this middle yellow highlighted area is completely empty, meaning 45. Although Spain is a country whose climate and geography are amazing, there are beaches, dense forests, mountains and deserts, but still why are people populated in such a strange way and it is not that No one has ever lived in this yellow highlighted area, in fact a few years ago there were
many people living here, but now if you go to this central and northern part, you will find entire villages where there are empty houses and buildings which are now Khandrai. But why is this strange population pattern of Spain so closely related to its history, politics, geography and some social factors? In today’s Blog, we will learn some things about Spain that perhaps you have not heard before.
If you have never heard, then let’s go several thousand years ago, when this entire area of Aib was under the control of the Roman Empire and it was called Hispania. At that time, the Roman Empire was spread from Northern Africa and Europe to the entire Middle East of today. And it was becoming very difficult and expensive for the Roman rulers to maintain such a big empire and that is why they divided the Roman Empire into two parts, the eastern part became the Byzantine Empire and the western part became the Western Roman
Empire. But after this division, the Roman Empire The power of Ibe began to break because the Germanic tribes spreading in Western Europe started attacking the Roman Empire, due to which the Western Roman Empire became weak and then finally in the fifth century, the Western Roman Empire collapsed and this entire area of Ibe came under the control of a Germanic tribe.
It came under the control of the Goths, who ruled this entire area for 250 years, but their control was temporary because very soon the Muslim Empire emerging from Arabia was going to take control of this entire area.
The Muslim Empire reached its peak in Umair in the eighth century. And its scope was spread from Northern India to today’s Middle East and Northern Africa and to spread the Majeed in this area, in 711 AD, the Muslim Army attacked Spain under the leadership of Tare bin Ziyad and captured this entire area.
The name of Hispania was changed to Al Andus. Muslims ruled Spain for the next 800 years. During these 800 years, there was a lot of development in science, philosophy and architecture in Spain, but the Muslim Empire had to face continuous Christian resistance. What is known as Reconquista was actually the battles that Christian umpires fought for many centuries to drive out Muslims from Spain and at the end of the 14th century, in the Battle of Granada, Christian armies captured Bilkhiri and from here onwards, Spain became the leader of the world. It
became a very big colonial super power. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Spanish Empire was spread over almost the entire American continent from California to Argentina and even here in Asia, the Philippines was also under the control of the Spanish Empire, but then gradually the Spanish Empire also consolidated.
And by the beginning of 1900, this empire spread over 5 million square miles was reduced to just 195,000 square miles. Then in 1930, a very bloody civil war started in Spain which ended in 1939 when General Francisco Franco.
Nationalist forces under leadership won this war and Franco became the ruler of Spain for the next 30 years and this 30 years is considered the dark star of the modern history of Spain.5 lakh people were killed in this civil war and the Spanish economy was greatly affected. There was a bad impact and then the rest of the work was completed by the protectionist policies of General Franco. This was the time when more than half of the population of Spain lived in rural areas and all these people used to do farming.
Franco did this to save the local industry. The borders were closed and imports were completely stopped, after which Spain was completely cut off from international trade. Due to the borders being closed, farmers were neither getting any new machinery, nor pesticides, nor any technology with which they could increase their production.
The government was also controlling prices very strictly and the result of all this was that the agricultural industry also started collapsing and many people started leaving rural areas and moving towards cities or other countries. In the late 1950s, Franco was found guilty of his policies. He started to realize the importance of trade and gradually started opening the borders for international trade and this is where the Spanish Economic Miracle started.
With this trade being opened, two things happened, first, trade started with France, Germany and England, which increased economic activity. Secondly, all this economic activity was taking place in the big cities of Spain, all the big companies were in urban areas, now where there are companies, there will be jobs and where there are jobs, people will go and live there and this is what happened with Spain because of the first agricultural industry cluster.
People had left these rural areas and now due to good opportunities in the cities, people started leaving these central areas and moving to big cities which are mostly on the coast of Spain, so history and political decisions became one of the reasons for this population pattern of Spain. The second region is the geography of Spain.
There are a lot of mountains in Spain, so much so that Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe. There are six mountain ranges here. In the south is the Betic Range. In the center are the Ibean and Central Ranges. On the northern side are the Cantabrian and Leon Ranges. And on the North East is the Pines Mountain Range along the border of France and Andorra.
The Northern side of Spain is lush green while the Southern side has desert where the temperature is the highest in the whole of Europe and in the recent past, Spain has been affected by climate change. This has had a very bad impact. According to the United Nations, 74% of Spain is in the desert, as a result, 18% of the area of Spain can become a desert forever.
In such a situation, due to lack of proper water facility in rural areas, many people are living in these areas. They are leaving rural areas and going to cities. Similarly, if we see the most empty region of Spain, it is this area on the northern side which is called Spanish Lap Land or Sirenia Cult Berica and this area is bigger than countries like Denmark and Croatia.
The biggest reason for low population is the mountain ranges, due to which it is very difficult and expensive to build a construction or rail road network here and that is why proper infrastructure could not be built here, due to which this area is very poor even in the 21st century. Similarly, there is Satin, just 100 km away from Madrid, where once there were many people but now it is becoming a ghost town and today only 50 people live here but it is not depopulated here due to geography.
Rather, along with the lack of infrastructure, it is also due to another big problem and that is the low fertility rate. Spain is the only country in Europe where the fertility rate is the lowest in the whole of Europe. In the last 5 years, the number of births in Spain is more than There have been deaths. The fertility rate of Spain has been falling continuously for the last 50 years and the biggest reason for this is people being single and unstable employment opportunities.
While improving their financial situation, these people take so much time that they reach the age of marriage. In Spain, women give birth to their first child at the age of 10 to 40 and this is the reason why the average birth rate for women in Spain is 1.19, which means on average a Spanish woman gives birth to only one child and according to NIA data, the average birth rate for women in any country is 1.19.
To sustain its population, Spain needs a rate of at least two children for women. According to statistics, if Spain’s birth rate does not reach two children, then by 2040 Spain will go into net negative population growth and it will have at least 60 to 70 lakh children. Immigrants will be needed to fulfill this lack of population. A major reason for this MT area is the low birth rate, for which the Spanish government will have to provide benefits and grants to couples and also provide better infrastructure in rural areas.
This population pattern of Spain will have to be changed in the coming time because on one hand new generation is not being born and on the other hand the generation A which is still alive is also moving to other countries for better quality of life. Who knows what will be the outcome of this Spanish Empire, which ruled the world for many years, in the coming few years? We would request you again.
